Dennis Pavao - 1986

Dennis Dooley Pavao graced our world from Wednesday, July 11, 1951, to Friday, January 18, 2002.
He was just 50 when he left us, passing from a brain aneurysm.
Dennis debuted with the trio, Hui Ohana, making their 1st recording on June 29, 1972.
After the breakup of the group in the mid-1980s, Dennis continued to perform as a soloist.
In 1986, he released his Hoku Award winning album, “Ka Leo Ki’eki’e”.
We’ll share this album as we honor our dearly departed friend.

Classic Rerun - Kona Blend 1979

“Kona Blend” was a group of 3 brothers at its core.
“Butch” Kay play bass & sang.
Don Kay played ukulele & sang.
And Leroy Kay played guitar & sang.
Matthew Malapit played lead guitar & sang.
For their 2nd album, titled “Anybody”, they were joined by lead guitarists John Alden & Al Hendrickson, plus Robert Darling on Congas.
Today, we’ll share Kona Blend from 1979, the same year that Territorial Airwaves launched on the air.

Classic Rerun - Jon & Randy 1975

In 1975, Jonathan Kay Kamakawiwo’ole Osorio was just 23 years old.
But Randy Kamuela Borden was just 22 years old.
The two individual performers came together to perform as one….creating a kaleidoscope of moods and sounds of contemporary Hawaii.
Jack de Mello recorded the pair as J&R Incorporated in 1975.
So we’ll dive into our records archives to hear our favorite Jon & Randy music from 1975.

Classic Rerun - Genoa Keawe 1966

In 1966, Genoa Keawe was unhappy with the deals being offered by the local record companies.
She was urged to start her own record company by friends Phil and Edith Helsley, and Genoa got a $25,000 loan from First Hawaiian Bank.
Genoa’s husband and her family helped to take care of the children while she produced and distributed her own records.
Very hands on, Genoa handled much of the bookkeeping and public relations herself.

Classic Rerun - Hui Ohana - 1972

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we bring back some of our most requested shows for Classic Rerun. Enjoy!
In 1972, the group “Hui Ohana” exploded upon Hawaiian music scene with their debut record, “Young Hawaii Plays Old Hawaii”.
The trio featured fraternal twin brothers Ledward & Nedward Ka’apana, with their cousin, Dennis Pavao.
With breathtaking guitar work, engaging bass runs, and amazing falsetto vocals, the group brought Hawaiian music back to its roots.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorite “Hui Ohana” recordings from their debut June 26, 1972 recording session.
