Kahauanu Lake

Kahauanu Lake was born in Wailuku, Maui, on January 1, 1932, and we lost him on March 6, 2011 at the age of 79.
The singer, musician, arranger, composer, ukulele teacher, and mentor formed the “Kahauanu Lake Trio” in 1955, and headlined at the Kaimana Beach Hotel, the Queen Kapiolani Hotel, the Halekulani Hotel, and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
In later years, he continued his legacy with the birth of the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame & Museum.

37th Annual Territorial New Years Party

As the old year was ending in ancient times, Hawaiian kahuna associated with certain He’iau on the Western side of each inhabited Hawaiian island would watch for the appearance of “Makali’i”, a store cluster that appears in the evening sky.
Once “Makali’i” was seen, the next moon would begin the “Makahiki” season, a 4-month period when warfare was prohibited, and people celebrated with games and sports!
When Westerners arrived with their tradition of the New Year’s celebration, it coincided with the Hawaiian practice of makahiki!
For this show, we’ll focus on recordings of New Year’s music.
Join us as we share favorite recordings illustrating that “Territorial New Years” type of Hawaiian music.

37th Annual Territorial Christmas Party

The words “Mele Kalikimaka” are a phonetic translation of “Merry Christmas”.
When Westerners first brought the custom of Christmas to Hawaii. it coincided with the Hawaiian traditional observance of “Makahiki”.

Today, we’ll roast some musical chestnuts over a hot turntable, as we share our 37th annual Territorial Christmas Party.

Hawaii Calls presents Young Hawaiians

The Hawaii Calls radio show was broadcast to all parts of the globe between 1935 and 1975.
In 1964, the Don Ho & the Aliis era began.
The Waikiki entertainment scene went through change, with more young acts with the 60s sound performing in the showrooms and lounges.
