The Leo Nahenahe Singers were led by Noelani Kanoho Mahoe, with Mona Noelani Teves, Ethelynne Kaleimokihana Teves, & Lynette Kaopuiki Paglinawan.
They were backed up on this Hawaiian Christmas recording by leader Harold Hakuole on bass, Francis Ho’okano on vibes, Albert Ka’ailau on guitar, Clarence Hohu on drums, & Leland Atta Isaacs on slack key guitar.
In this program, 50+ years later, we’ll share this memorable music.

Classic Rerun - Richard Kauhi - Reflections

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we bring back some of our most requested shows for Classic Rerun. Enjoy!

In 1968, Waikiki Records released an album produced by Tommy Kearns called, “The Reflections Of Richard Kauhi and his Piano”, featuring Richard Kauhi.
Richard Kapapanuihanaumoku Kauhi was born on May 21, 1929 and we lost him at the age of 49 to lung cancer on January 21, 1979.
After breaking in with The Kalima Brothers in 1942, he created the Richard Kauhi Quartet in 1948.
But in 1951, he left Hawaii for a solo career in California.
He returned to Hawaii in 1968, shortly after this album was released.
He performed in numerous clubs including Trappers in the Hyatt Regency Waikiki.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorite recordings from “The Reflections of Richard Kauhi and his Piano” from 1968.

Classic Rerun - Folk Songs of Hawaii - 1963

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we bring back some of our most requested shows for Classic Rerun. Enjoy!

Many look upon the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s as a time of cultural reconnection for Hawaii’s people.
But the Renaissance could not have occurred unless there was an awakening to begin the process of rediscovery.
Folk Songs of Hawaii was the cross over album, featuring Noelani Kanoho Mahao, Ka’upena Wong, and the Leo Nahenahe Singers, that first captured the interest of Hawaii’s youth, already immersed in the Hootenany folk scene of the early 1960s.
So we’ll dive into our records archives to hear our favorite Folk Songs of Hawaii music from 1963.

Bill Murata was with us from 1923 to 1983.
Bill produced more than 100 record albums over a period of 30 years.
His albums won 6 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards in the first 5 years of the Hoku’s existence, before his untimely death at the age of 60.

Classic Rerun - Naipo Serenaders - 1979

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we bring back some of our most requested shows for Classic Rerun. Enjoy!

In 1979, Kokua Records released an album produced by Nancy Gustafsson and Victor Rittenband called, “Hawaiian Happening”, featuring The Naipo Serenaders.
The Naipo Serenaders consisted of George Kahulanui Naipo on bass & vocals; His wife, Charlene Ku’uipo Naipo on guitar & vocals; And his cousin, Alma Kalahikiola Ahuna on piano & vocals.
While performing at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel in Waikiki, they recorded this album.
Today, we’ll share some of our favorite recordings from “Hawaiian Happening” from 1979.
